While researching for our recent article in The Get on house-cleaning services (a story that's created quite the kerfuffle, but that's a whole other story), I stumbled upon this local line of eco-friendly cleaning products. I happily stock my cabinets with Method and Seventh Generation, but I was excited to see this kind of action going on in our backyard.
Founded by two yogis in Evanston a little over a year ago, Blissful Home takes the concept of cleaning to the next level. The mission statement on their site reads: "We see home-caring as a yoga and living meditation; a clearing and forging of our sacred space--our home." Maybe it sounds a tad New Agey, but I'm reminded of the effect my space has, especially my cleaned-up space, on my mental well-being every time I come home after a long day's work.
The company's all-natural products use essential oils for their aromatherapeutic value and efficacy. For instance, lavender and peppermint act as anti-bacterials, and tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties. Plus, they smell great. The short list of additional ingredients includes water, olive and coconut oil-derived substances and citric acid. On top of the basic cleaners, the ladies just launched two newbies: a yoga mat spray (a nice way to stave off the musty sweat smell) and a tub/tile/sink cleaner ('cause who wants to slip into a bubble bath spiked with chemical-laced cleaners?).
So, if you're in the mood for a clean, green sweep, give one of their products a whirl; they're available online, at the Four Seasons Shop at the Chicago Waldorf School and a few shops in Evanston.
