Weekend with Bernie
A few months ago, I found myself at Matilda (Sheffield and Barry) knocking back a few with some friends. We were forbidden to sit in the back room for some reason—there was apparently a party going on. I glanced in and noted that the pool table was covered with cakes, cookies, deep dish pizza and assorted sundae toppings. Strange. So, my friends and I did what any curious person would do—we went inside and asked what was going on.
After some digging, and a few snarky comments from some really angry (for some reason) woman, we learned that the party was for someone named Bernie. We located him—sitting at a booth and wearing a Cookie Monster T-shirt—and wished him a happy birthday. "Thanks a lot guys! That's nice of you. It's not my birthday," he shared. "Actually, this is a Biggest Loser party."
Turns out Bernie had auditioned for everyone's favorite weight loss TV show, and had made it to the final round in Los Angeles. Before he left, his friends decided to load him up with every decadent delight they could imagine. I chatted with the friendly Bernie for a bit, gave him my card, and told him to contact me if he made it on the show, which he promised to do.
This morning, though, I got a screener for the first episode of season five, which screens January 1 at 7pm on NBC (ah yes, the coveted New Year's Day launch slot). And there Bernie was on the DVD cover, sporting a blue Cookie Monster–less tee.
