Lights. Camera. Sports Action!
Thanks to films like Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, pure long-form improvisation has a comedic place in the entertainment biz. Who's to blame the six Chicago improvisers responsible for Sports Action Team for claiming their veritable piece of the unscripted pie? This new show, which premiered Sunday (Sept 10, 11:30pm, NBC) is a mockumentary-style comedy following the work routines of a fictional local sports news team. Overused work dynamics abound; the overbearing boss, the vain showboat, the incompetent intern.
Overall, the show has serious laugh potential--the funniest moments reveal themselves completely off-the-cuff. The comedic momentum, at times, feels a little forced. The cast is made up of stellar improvisers, and most likely they're still testing the waters--and boundaries--of this new show premise.
