5 things to do today: Thursday, September 7
Try a new fitness class, hit an arty party, plus more!
AROUND TOWN
Arty Party In recent years, Around the Coyote Festival might have waned in cutting-edgy-ness when compared with its newer art festival counterparts--Version Fest, NOVA and Stray Show just to name a few. Well, this year we predict it will be back on track. MCA curator Tricia Van Eck will corral artwork for the Curator's Choice Exhibition, kicking off tonight at the Around the Coyote Opening Party and Benefit. Judging by the avant-garde, contemporary art she handles everyday, this show won't lack for freshness. Nor will the abundant food and booze creations Las Palmas Restaurant is preparing for tonight's festivities. Around the Coyote Gallery, 1935 W North Ave at Winchester Ave (773-342-6777). 8pm, $20.
CHILL OUT
Toast a new fitness class Try a new mind-body workout at Soulistic Studio and Spa. The BalleCore workout combines elements of ballet, yoga and Pilates. The workshop will be followed by The BalleCore Workout book signing with author Molly Weeks, plus drinks. The class debuts on the studio's schedule Oct 2. 805 N Milwaukee Ave at Chicago Ave (312-226-4685, www.soulisticstudiospa.com). 6-8pm, $25.
COMEDY
Robert Buscemi This Subterranean show is being filmed for future DVD use, so you gotta believe Buscemi's bringing his A-game. Underground comics-in-arms Kumail and Jared Logan open. Subterranean, 2011 W North Ave at Damen and Milwaukee Aves (773-278-6600). 9:30pm, $10.
MUSIC
Listen up The broadsword-wielding Norse (okay, Canadian) metal god is the best thing since Spinal Tap, especially when paired with Zolar X, LA’s reunited alien invaders. The Note, 8pm.
DANCE
Increase your cultural vocabulary What's Koodiyattam? You'll find out if you attend Attam: South Indian Dance Traditions lecture and performance of live dance, theater and music tonight.
