* FREE Movies in the Park Mon 25–Sun 1. Various Chicago Park District locations; see website (312-742-7529, chicagoparkdistrict.com). Grant Park movies are long gone, but the Chicago Park District has since picked up the slack by beefing up its neighborhood outdoor movie series. More than 100 local parks get their own big screen for a night or two. All movies begin at dusk.
FREE Chicago Arabesque—CANCELLED Wed 27–Fri 29, 10am–3pm; Sat 30, 11am–7pm. Daley Plaza, Washington and Dearborn Sts (312-744-3315, chicagoarabesque.com). Celebrate the art and culture of the Arab world through music, food and dance—all in the heart of downtown. Dance the dabke, an Arab line dance, or get some henna as you only temporarily embarrass your parents.
* Milwaukee Summerfest Wed 27–Sun 1, noon–midnight. Summerfest Grounds, 200 N Harbor Dr, Milwaukee, WI (414-273-2600, summerfest.com). Weekends and after 4pm $16, weekdays $9, kids 10 and under and seniors $4; additional fee for Marcus Amphitheater concerts. For the 45th year of the “World’s Largest Music Festival” you’ll have 11 days to line up for headliners or save money with up-and-comers. Headliners include the Roots, Robyn, Aerosmith, Lady Antebellum and many others.
FREE Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club Family Fest Wed 27–Fri 29, 6–10pm; Sat 30, Sun 1, 10am–11pm. 2501 W Irving Park Rd, in back lot (nbgc.org). This yearly benefit for the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club youth programs includes a carnival, ticketed rides, live music, food and a raffle.
Craft Beer Festival Fri 29, 5–10pm; Sat 30, 11am–10pm; Sun 1, 11am–9pm. St. Michael’s Church, 1633 N Cleveland Ave (773-868-3010, chicagoevents.com). $5, beer tasting $75. This inaugural event channels a good ol' Belgian beer fest to showcase more than 50 Midwestern brews. Tastings at sample sessions are an additional charge. On Fri 29, 6–9pm, 25 tickets cost $50. On Sat 30 and Sun 1 from 1 to 6pm, 25 tickets cost $35. Those who could do without brew can take in music, food and crafts in a separate area.
Eyes to the Skies Festival Fri 29, 3–11pm, Sat 30, Sun 1, 6am–11pm. Lisle Community Park, 1825 Short St, Lisle (630-541-6095, eyestotheskies.org). $5, kids under 5 free. Hot-air balloons take to the sky daily at 6am and 6pm, and grounded balloons fire up nightly around 8:30pm. Stay for the carnival, craft fair, kids’ area, fireworks, food and live music each night.
* FREE Grant Park Music Festival Fri 29 at 6:30pm; Sat 30 at 7:30pm. Millennium Park, Pritzker Pavilion, 205 E Randolph St (312-742-7638, grantparkmusicfestival.com). Pack a picnic and stretch out on the Great Lawn or grab a chair in the Seating Bowl as you listen to the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus serenade packs of Chicagoans. Food and drink, including alcohol, are permitted. (Yes!)
* Naperville Ribfest Fri 29, 4–10pm; Sat 30, Sun 1, noon–10pm. Knoch Park, 724 S West St, Naperville (ribfest.net). $10–$25 (depending on evening’s headliner), kids under 11 free. For more than two decades, this pork party has been serving up grilled grub along with rock- and country-flavored tunes. This year, headliners include Steve Miller Band, Joe Walsh and ZZ Top. Independence Day fireworks explode overhead on Jul 3.
World’s Largest Block Party Fri 29, Sat 30, 5:30–10:30pm. Madison St at Des Plaines St (312-648-1590, worldslargestblockparty.com). $45, advance $40, two-day pass $75. Old St. Pat’s hosts the 28th running of this music- and food-filled benefit. Ben Folds Five and Lifehouse headline. Four drinks are included with each ticket.
Cans Music Fest Sat 30, 1–11pm. Cans, 1640 N Damen Ave (773-227-2277, cansbar.com). $5. Too White Crew headlines this bar-run block party, which will feature plenty of games and BBQ. The party continues after fest hours at the titular bar.
FREE Gold Coast Art Fair Sat 30, Sun 1, 10am–6pm. Butler Field, Grant Park, 100 S Lake Shore Dr (773-742-7529, amdurproductions.com). Grant Park (and not the tony neighborhood) plays host to this 55th annual fest, which showcases the work of more than 350 juried artists.
Wavefront Music Festival Sat 30 at noon; Sun 1 at noon. Montrose Beach, 601 W Montrose Ave (312-857-3378, wavefrontmusicfestival.com). About $49, two-day pass about $89, VIP about $125, two-day VIP about $199. Kick up some sand during this inaugural electronic dance music festival at Montrose Beach. Duck Sauce, Erick Morillo and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy are among the DJs set to turn the waterfront into a dance floor.
