Summer festivals: June 2013 festival calendar for events in Chicago
Bellwether, Chicago Pride Fest, Spring Awakening and more of the best summer festivals in Chicago this June.
June weather—the much more pleasant preamble to July's usual onslaught of heat and humidity—makes it easy to be outside and enjoy some of the summer's best festivals. Half of Lincoln Square's Maifest actually takes place in June (wacky Germans!), and Midsommar Fest is happening in early summer (crazy Swedes!). Chicago SausageFest is followed a week later by another sort of hot dog exhibition, Pride Fest. (And that's not to say that Pride is all dudes.) The mid-month beat salad Spring Awakening brings Bassnectar, Moby and more EDM to Soldier Field. Or, if you're already over the standard summer street fairs, check out the Scottish Festival & Highland Games; there's nothing like watching a burly chap in a kilt flipping a giant tree trunk to beat back the boredom. But not all the fun is in the city: A road trip north of the state border gets you to the Great Wisconsin Cheese Fest, which (do we really have to say it?) is not for the lactose intolerant.
