Need to do your homework in peace? Last fall, the Pritzker Military Library (104 S Michigan Ave; 312-374-9333; 10am–3pm; drop-in $5, see website for membership information) moved into new digs: three floors of a dramatically restored Holabird and Roche building. Quiet reading rooms with Internet hookups offer comfy seats and a striking view of Millennium Park. Put your schoolwork aside for a minute and explore the books and ephemera, which include two floors of stacks, a Revolutionary War soldier’s pocket journal, classic WWI posters and a Medal of Honor.

By-tour-only, historic Glessner House (1800 S Prairie Ave; 312-326-1480; visitors center open Wed–Sun 11:30am–4pm; displays free) gives you a reason to drop by for a quick half hour. In its cozy visitor center, it opened two small exhibits; one gives a preface on the Romanesque-revival architect H.H. Richardson, and the other explores architecture books owned by the Glessner family, who commissioned the fortress-like house and its beautiful garden. Both provide worthwhile (free!) information for passersby looking to duck in without committing to a tour.
