This summer, the Art Institute of Chicago’s African Art and Indian Art of the Americas galleries (111 S Michigan Ave; 312-443-3600, artic.edu/aic; 10:30am–5pm; $18; seniors, students and kids 14 and over $12; kids 13 and under, and first and second Wednesdays of the month free; $2 discount for Chicago residents) moved to the museum’s Morton Wing—formerly the contemporary art wing. The much larger space allowed curators Kathleen Bickford Berzock and Richard Townsend to display dozens of never-before-exhibited and loaned works, like a textile woven from the golden threads of one million Golden Orb spiders. Los Angeles–based architecture firm wHY imbued the space with a clean, light and warm aesthetic that shows off dark-toned art objects, including masks, headdresses, pottery, textiles and beadwork.
