Author Mary Anne Mohanraj funds a sci-fi erotica novel-in-stories.
When last we checked in with Mary Anne Mohanraj, in 2005, her book about Sri Lankan immigrants living in America, Bodies in Motion, had just come out from HarperCollins. But now there she is on Kickstarter using the site to help her focus on writing a novel-in-stories that she says “might be a little unconventional for a traditional publisher.”
The proposed sci-fi erotica book, Demi-Monde, concerns a group of students at the University of All Worlds dealing with imminent war.
“I recently wrote a novel that my agent is submitting to New York editors even as we speak,” the Wicker Park resident says. “And when I was thinking about my next book project, I realized I wanted to try something a little more experimental and edgy than I thought mainstream publishers might be comfortable with. The Web may offer some good alternatives for those of us working on odder projects.”
The 40-year-old, Sri Lankan–born author says some of the $8,000 she’s trying to raise will go toward child-care costs so she can carve out the time to sit down and write the stories. That’s about as honest a reason for a Kickstarter campaign as I’ve ever heard.
