Rebuilding Exchange | Sneak Peek

Since setting up shop in 2009 as a converter of landfill-destined trash into artisanal treasure, nonprofit Rebuilding Exchange has been providing training for novice woodworkers and preaching the gospel of recycled goods. Now it’s trying to make a sustainable market of locally made, recycled stuff a reality. It just needs your money.

Rebuilding Exchange has launched a Kickstarter campaign that invites supporters to help raise the $38,000 necessary to expand its RX Made furniture line. “We’re trying to bring back small manufacturing,” explains Cynthia Main, the director of RX Made and the director of education and special events for Rebuilding Exchange, as she walks me through the cavernous warehouse on West Webster, the distant hum of chain saws buzzing in the background. RX Made already makes a few household items like chopping boards, knife holders and coasters. The $38,000 is essentially start-up capital to help it make more items. Rebuilding Exchange is also collaborating with firm Strand Design to design the new furniture.

Depending on how much you give, supporters can receive a custom-made clock, a bookshelf and a beer opener, all made from recycled materials. Says Main, “We want to create jobs, not just train people for them.”
