At its peak in 1908, the First Ward Ball drew 20,000 inebriated people into the streets as part of a ruse to fill the coffers of aldermen John “Bathhouse” Coughlin and Michael “Hinky Dink” Kenna. Now special-events org Pocket Guide to Hell and Scott Priz salute the legendary bacchanal with an updated 2013 version. Expect performances from writer Bill Savage, steampunk group Spears & Gears and literary burlesque troupe Chicago Poetry Bordello, among others. The Chicagoland Family Pet Expo goes beyond your standard cat-and-dog show. Yes, there are dress-up contests for your corgi, but there are also tricks from the Extreme Canine Stunt Dog Show—whose pooches were once destined for the pound—in addition to bargain pet gear and performances from “parrot-whisperer” John Lege, a.k.a.
