On the go
Next time you travel via Amtrak, don’t forget to bring your laptop. Free Wi-Fi is now available on the premium Acela Express trains between Boston and Washington from New York City and the Downeaster trains between Portland, Maine, and Boston. Expansion of the program (hopefully it’ll come to Chicago soon, although the regions are yet to be determined) is in the works.
A Passage to India
If you think free Internet access sounds swanky, take a trip through India on the new Indian Railways’ Maharajas’ Express. The just-launched luxury train, which travels between Kolkata and Delhi, features 14 deluxe cabins and suites (the crème de la crème grand presidential suite costs $2,500 per person per day) equipped with TVs, Internet, phones and climate control.
I can see clearly now
Supplement your guidebook by snapping a picture of anything from the Eiffel Tower to the Mona Lisa to the bottle of vinho verde just ordered at a café in Lisbon with your Android phone, and the image-recognition app Google Goggles will provide instantaneous search results on the subject.
